23. October 2026

Iceland’s pension system ranks third in an international assessment of pension systems covering 55 countries worldwide. This is the sixth consecutive year that Iceland has received the highest grade in the assessment.

The annual study is conducted by the consulting firm Mercer and the CFA Institute. Pension systems are evaluated and awarded points based on a range of factors. This year, only the Netherlands and Denmark rank ahead of Iceland. The Netherlands tops the list with 85.5 points, followed by Denmark with 84.1 points and Iceland close behind with 84.0 points.

Mercer evaluates pension systems based on three main criteria: the adequacy of pension benefits, the long-term sustainability of the system, and its integrity and reliability. Iceland receives an A grade in all three categories, indicating that its pension system provides strong pension benefits, is financially sustainable and enjoys the confidence of its members.

The Mercer CFA Institute Global Pension Index draws on data from the OECD, the International Monetary Fund and other international organisations, as well as information gathered by experts in each country. It is one of the most respected assessments of its kind, providing valuable insights into the strength, sustainability and long-term resilience of pension systems around the world.

The results once again highlight the strong position of Iceland’s pension system in international comparisons and its ability to provide members with secure pension benefits well into the future.
